The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) mobilizes communities to create equity and justice for people living with and vulnerable to HIV and related chronic diseases. We envision a world in which people living with HIV and related chronic diseases will thrive, and new HIV infections will be rare. Our work focuses on improving health equity, preventing new cases of HIV, serving as a collaboration and knowledge center, and being a bold voice for change.
We are seeking for an individual to serve as our Director, Individual Giving. The Director, Individual Giving will work in close collaboration with the Chief Officer, External Relations to support the individual giving objectives of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC). The position will be responsible for identifying and cultivating interest among prospective individual contributors; developing and implementing strategies for major gifts and planned giving; and cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors.
Principal functions and responsibilities of this position include the following:
- Manage, monitor and supervise AFC’s individual giving program — including major gifts fundraising, annual fund/direct mail, online solicitations and planned giving — to ensure that AFC meets or exceeds its individual giving goal;
- Implement programs/activities to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors at the $1,000 level or higher;
- Develop and execute ongoing strategies for qualifying prospects through small cultivation events, research, and community networking;
- Serve as the planned giving specialist with a focus on integrating planned giving into the overall fundraising strategy and introducing donors and prospects to the program;
- Work with the Chief Officer, External Relations to act as a key contact to Board members, Board emeriti and the Fund Development Committee;
- Personally solicit assigned donor portfolio, including preparation of personalized materials when needed;
- Manage a portfolio of donors in order to build new (and strengthen existing) relationships through face-to-face contact with individual major gift donors and prospects;
- Identify and solicit high-level fundraising event attendees and cultivate using moves management;
- Demonstrate strong and effective organizational leadership and encourage teamwork at all times;
- Model and promote professionalism, timeliness, accuracy and excellent judgment to achieve the highest professional standards;
- Act as staff liaison to the AFC Board Emeriti and AFC Associate Board;
- Keep abreast of relevant developments and changes in the fields of HIV/AIDS, individual major giving, online giving and direct mail;
- Develop and implement annual plans to achieve individual giving objectives at AFC;
- Work with leadership volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward appropriate donors;
- Work with board and fund development committee members to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors.
- Assist with agency-wide activities as directed, including Annual Meeting, AIDS Run & Walk, and others;
- Protect organization's value and manage risk by keeping information confidential;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience in nonprofit fund development or commensurate sales and business development experience
Master’s degree or higher preferred
Experience with major gifts campaign and building an Endowment Blackbaud products experience a plus
A track record of progressively increasing management responsibilities is highly desired, as well as a proven history of identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors/business
