Position Description:

 

The Annual Giving Director oversees the Museum of the American Revolution’s annual giving donors, from basic membership through our Revolution Society (starting at $1,000) and George Washington Council (starting at $10,000).  Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, the position is responsible for working with the Membership Manager, which this position supervises, to secure donors who can be retained and upgraded into Revolution Society and Washington Council members, thereby helping to build the pipeline for major gifts.  This position will achieve personal prospect activity and fundraising dollar goals to meet identified multi-year increases in prospects identified, cultivated and solicited as well as gifts and funds raised. To accomplish targets, the position also will be experienced in planning and conducting special events for purposes of cultivation, stewardship and recognition and also have a demonstrated knowledge of planned giving.

 

This is the ideal role for an experienced development professional who is also a history enthusiast and eager to make a mark as this new major national Museum begins its second full year of operations in Philadelphia.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage and grow the museum’s Annual Fund through prospect research, outreach, fundraising mailings, emails, and digital appeals. Determine message content and segmenting, write and edit letters and emails

  • Oversee the direct response process; select and supervise vendors; track annual fund donations, analyze progress, and make changes and adjust as needed to meet annual fund goals

  • Manage the Revolution Society of individuals contributing $1,000+ annually with a focus on growing the number of donations at the $5,000+ level

  • Work closely with the membership manager to design and manage a program to upgrade members into the Revolution Society

  • Maintain a large portfolio of 400-500 accounts under active cultivation with moves management strategies assigned for each

  • Ensure the highest quality donor stewardship. Respond quickly and effectively to all donor/potential donor requests; create and implement stewardship strategies.

  • Cultivate and manage a committee of Revolution Society volunteers who actively support the program, solicit new members, and advise the program

  • Create, implement and manage Revolution Society cultivation and stewardship events, including evening events, throughout the year

  • Actively participate in the strategy, messaging, and implementation of the Museum’s other major fundraising events

  • Produce high-quality written materials, including proposals, letters, presentations, brochures, briefing materials, contact reports, event run-of-shows, etc.

  • Work closely with Development colleagues to ensure gift acknowledgement letters, prospect tracking, database accuracy, mailings, reports, and donor communications are accurate and timely.

  • Track and prepare regular reports on revenue and budgets.

 

Education:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • CFRE or other professional fundraising designation desirable.

 

Experience/Skills:

 

  • Professional experience that includes five years of development work, preferably with a museum or other cultural institution.

  • Experience in successful relationship-building with prospects, donors, volunteers and board members; ability to nurture ongoing relationships.

  • Outstanding personal communication skills, both in speaking and writing, and able to present ideas effectively and influence people and audiences.   

  • Exceptional writing skills. Experience drafting compelling letters, and crafting promotional materials, membership materials, and newsletter content.

  • Excellent organization skills with attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve and multitask under tight deadlines.

  • Outstanding analytical skills and the ability to quickly produce reports and illustrations.

  • Ability to manage and track revenue projections and expense budgets.

  • Resourcefulness and flexibility, as well as a high level of motivation.

  • Commitment to donor confidentiality.

  • The ability to work in a positive team-oriented environment while also functioning autonomously.

  • Computer fluency including expertise with Raiser's Edge, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other relevant applications, including a POS system.

  • A valid driver’s license and some night’s/weekend hours and limited travel required.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with the philanthropic community is highly desirable.
